The door-to-door transport service is one of the most demanded in the world of logistics. However, you know that we like to dwell on some concepts that may seem simple but that hide more than what appears to the naked eye.

What is the door-to-door transportation service?

We can believe that the term door-to-door itself is fully explained. Indeed, the most basic part of a door-to-door service is that it includes the entire journey from the collection point to the final destination. However, this means different things if we are talking about private customers, international shipments, etc.
Door-to-door shipping in e-commerce

E-commerce shipments are one of the most frequent forms of electronic commerce. But delivering to an individual, door to door, is very different from delivering to a company. The presence of the recipient at home, having to access and enter urbanizations and houses, carrying the merchandise by hand in buildings that may not have an elevator…

It is a very different process from the distribution of industrial merchandise in industrial estates, with deliveries at the dock, the possibility of longer and pre-established hours, larger vehicles, larger streets, etc.
Door-to-door shipping in international transport

In international transport, the presence of Incoterms is constant, terms that explain the conditions under which the collection and delivery of the merchandise is carried out. They specify whether the delivery reaches the port of destination and is delivered on the ship, to a warehouse, to the recipient…

This makes the concept of door-to-door delivery especially important in international, air and sea transport. Not being clear about what service we have contracted can make us upset when we discover that we have not agreed on the delivery to the final recipient.
Other cases

There are other cases in which we must keep in mind how we are going to proceed so that a door-to-door shipment takes place. Among the most common are those cases in which most of the transportation can be done with a larger vehicle than the vehicle needed for the final stretch.

For example, we have enough merchandise to hire a full trailer, but at the destination we have to deliver to places where a trailer cannot be used, either due to lack of unloading means, access or for some other reason. This leads us to have to ask the door-to-door transport service to also have other vehicles that are capable of carrying out the final delivery.

As we have seen, from the simple idea of the door-to-door transport service we can find a range of cases that are very different from each other, but in all of which the ability to cover the entire route of the merchandise is very attractive for customers.
